In 1998, New York State adopted a law authorizing the establishment of 100 Charter Schools. The We the People Foundation for Constitutional Education is submitting an application to establish the Jefferson Academy Charter School in Glens Falls, NY. The following is its mission statement.

MISSION STATEMENT
FOR
JEFFERSON ACADEMY CHARTER SCHOOL

The mission of the Jefferson Academy Charter School is: 1) to provide students with academic experience that equals or exceeds the best in eastern upstate New York by employing proven "back-to-basics" methods (the Core Knowledge program and Open Court systems) along with innovative use of gifted and talented program methods applied to the general student body; 2) to achieve greater and more meaningful participation of parents in the educational and decision-making process; 3) to provide an excellent alternative for parents and teachers who are not satisfied with existing educational options; 4) to instill in each student a sense of virtues, moral values, and personal responsibility; 5) to educate each student about our national and state constitutions, the sovereignty of the people, their responsibility and role as citizens in a true democratic republic, and the basic workings of local and state government; 6) to instill in each student an appreciation of the local region based upon knowledge and familiarity with its cultural, historical, environmental, and economic resources; 7) to have basic introduction to a practical knowledge of personal finances, and use and operation of legal and health resources; 8) for each student to graduate with a Regents diploma, competence and confidence in a set of academic skills, the ability to write clearly, and a plan for future development.
